09-Aug-2019

After spending a summer in the sea, autumn and winter are also the time for travel lovers find new adventures. Tay Bac (North West region of Vietnam) is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations with diverse aspects all year round. Anyone who loves travel will be no stranger to the popular occasions in Tay Bac such as ripe rice season, triangle circuit flower, white plum blossoms and white mustard flower season.

Ha Giang

September and October are the time when Tay Bac, Sapa, Mu Cang Chai and Hoang Su Phi - Ha Giang are the heavenly locations as rice in all terraced fields is ripe, giving the beautiful gold color.

After the ripe rice season ends, travel lovers can enjoy a journey back to Ha Giang, the home of the blooming triangle circuit flower in every November. That is a cue for the beginning of cold winter days.

In this article, JTA Tours will show you the way to Ha Giang and 10 famous tourist destinations in Ha Giang (mainly places with many triangle circuit flowers).

10 tourist destinations in Ha Giang, the most beautiful spots in Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark

1. Yen Minh Pine Forest

Ha Giang

Running through Can Ty commune, passing Quang Ba double mountain about 40 km, going through the zigzag roads, you will find Yen Minh pine forest. It is also known as the 2nd Da Lat in Vietnam. The green pine trees in the forest, reaching higher and higher among the mountains will attract every travelers passing by.

2. Pho Bang ancient town – Yen Minh

Pho Bang is home to old houses with unique architecture. There are blooming triangle circuit flowers at both sides of the road. On the way to Pho Bang, you will pass through the rose valley and a large triangular circuit flower field. From Pho Bang you can also get to Lung Cam, which has Sung La – a peaceful and beautiful valley.

Ha Giang

3. Sung La Valley

Sung La is known as one of the most famous tourist destinations in Ha Giang with blooming flower gardens. It is also called a beautiful flower among the rocky plateau. Sung La valley attracts tourists by its rustic and peaceful small clay houses, green corn fields and the gentle triangular circuit flower. Sung La is the typical scenery of the mountainous region. In Sung La, there is Lung Cam village, where life is still intact, as the people still weave linen and use bamboo baskets for harvesting vegetables and carrying babies, etc.

Lung Cam is currently home to more than 60 households, mainly Lo Lo, Mong and Han ethnic groups. Out of which, Lo Lo village is the oldest place which still keeps the rustic color in the past. To go to Lo Lo village, you have to cross a long road full of triangular circuit flowers. Annually in January and February, there are many kinds of flowers blooming around Pao’s house such as cherry blossoms, plum flower and pear flowers. Behind the flowers are the rustic clay houses that are tinted with time.

Ha Giang

4. The mansion of the Vuong Family

Vuong's mansion is located on the top of a small hill, where the entrance is surrounded by rows of ancient samu trees. The mansion belongs to Meo King. It’s the richest family in the region because they sold opium in the past. The mansion has a unique architecture, bearing the influence of three architectural backgrounds: Chinese, H’Mong and French. It was recognized by the government as a National Monument in 1993. In 2004, the Vuong family decided to devote this mansion to the government for conservation. You can see its glamour by looking down from the mansion to the remote valley below. If you come here on the beginning day of Sa Phin market, which meets on 9 to 11 am or 9 to 11 pm near the mansion, remember to drop by. Also, the distance from the mansion to Dong Van is only 14km.

*Admission fee: VND 20,000/ person

5. Lung Cu Flagpole

From Vuong Family's mansion, you can come back to the three-way crossroad, turn to Pho La and Ma Le to reach Lung Cu flagpole. This is the starting point of the first drawing of the S map of Vietnam. On the road from Ma Le to Lung Cu, you will see a large triangular circuit flower field on the hillside. This is by far where most of the triangular circuit flowers are grown. Lung Cu is 2000m above sea level. It’s the only place where Lo Lo people live. You can stand on Lung Cu flagpole to watch the sunset, then turn back to Dong Van town to stay for one night. Because people often rumor that if you don’t stay in Dong Van, you do not visit Ha Giang.

Ha Giang

6. Dong Van Ancient Town

The ancient town lies in the middle of the valley and is surrounded by rocky mountains. The town has only 40 roofs lined up together. In the evening, the town is quiet and peaceful. If you visit the town on the 14th, 15th and 16th every lunar month, you will see a very different town. It’s when the local people hang their red lanterns, showcase their traditional brocade products, foods and perform cultural activities. Early in the morning, the town looks like a painting that is mixed of two colors: the bright yellow of the sun and the gray of the old houses. Looking down from above, near the three rows of the market forming a U shape with yin and yang tiles (glazed tiles) are two ancient streets running along the foot of the mountain. The common architecture here is two-storey clay houses.

From Dong Van to Ma Pi Leng pass, you will arrive at Meo Vac district.

Ha Giang

7. Ma Pi Leng Pass

From Dong Van to Meo Vac about 20 km, you will pass by Hanh Phuc (Happiness) road to Ma Pi Leng pass. This road is the connection of Dong Van and Meo Vac. This is known as the most beautiful road in the rock highlands. If you go to Ha Giang, you can try to ride a motorbike. One of your side is a high mountain, another side is a deep chasm. You can also enjoy the Nho Que river winding like a strip which will make you experience extremely wonderful emotions. Standing high above looking away, there are thousands of gray layers of mountains, white clouds and deep chasm. Here, there is a rock outcrop over Ma Pi Leng Pass, where you can feel the immense majesty of the northern border forest to the fullest. Passing the pass, you will arrive at Meo Vac district. You can take a turn to Yen Minh or Ha Giang city or to Bac Me (however this road is very far).

8. Ha Giang backward markets

Ha Giang still retains its national identity so that the backward markets still take place according to its normal schedule. Participating in these markets, visitors will somehow feel the breath and soul of the ethnic people here.

Pho Cao backward market (going through Yen Minh to Pho Bang, meeting on the day of the Dragon and the Dog) - Pho Bang backward market (entering Sung La intersection, meeting on the day of the Mouse and the Horse) - Sa Phin backward market (near the Vuong family’s mansion, meeting on the day of the Snake and the Pig) - Lung Phin backward market (meeting on the day of the Tiger and the Monkey). All of the market sessions will start early and end at noon. The stalls displays different products such as: brocade clothes, vegetables, herbs, food, shoes, pigs, Mong’s dogs, etc.

Dong Van town also has its own market. This market takes place every Sunday. It was built of stone in the 1920s. Therefore, it has contributed many ancient and old features to the rustic of Dong Van ancient town so far. The market also sells items such as clothes, towels of the Mong people, indigo shirts of Tay people, anise, cinnamon, sandals, shoes, vegetables, fruits and food such as H’Mong traditional food, five-colored sticky rice, fried donut, buckwheat bread, corn cake, and especially the corn wine.

Ha Giang

9. Hoang Su Phi District

Around May (rainy season) or September (ripe rice season) is a great time to travel to Hoang Su Phi. From Ha Giang, you can rent a motorbike in the city and travel to Hoang Su Phi. Here, travelers will have the chance to see the golden terraces covered in white clouds, scattered by the ethnic roofs behind the trees. Every afternoon when the sun sets, the sky and clouds harmonize together with the smoke from the rooftop of the stilt houses’ kitchens, making the scenery more peaceful, rustic but majestic. The areas that grows rice the most in Hoang Su Phi are: Lieu village, Phung village, San Sai Ho, Nam Ty, Ho Thau and Thong Nguyen.

10. Cam Son Mountain

Cam Son mountain is located in Ha Giang city, near May 19th road. On the road to the mountain are Thanh Long stream, Tien stream, etc. flowing all year round and the water is very cool. There are large lakes and caves in the mountains such as Ong The cave, Ong Ho cave,Thuy Tien cave, etc.

In Ha Giang you can have a bath in medicinal herbs of the Dao people, enjoy Ha Giang cuisine, such as poison porridge, Dong Van roll cake, H’Mong traditional food, buckwheat bread, triangle circuit wine, corn wine, stream fish, chicken, pork and so on.

The most beautiful time to visit Ha Giang is the Triangle Circuits Flower season, from October to mid-November. This is also a very crowded season so you need to make early reservations if you want to have good accommodations there. Contact JTA Tours for more information and best reservations.
